Vision and values

Writing history. For 137 years

In the absence of emergency services, during an impressive period of industrial development, five carpenters from Berlin, including Gustav Dietrich, contacted Dr. Paul Christeller from the Jewish Hospital in Berlin in 1880 to learn first aid.

Together with Dr. Alfred Bernstein and Dr. Ignaz Zadek, they developed a First Aid Manual for the workers in Berlin.

It is the first first aid manual in the world.

Gustav Dietrich, the father of ASB and one of the carpenters, offered a room in his house where workers could learn first aid. Thus, the “Workers’ Samaritan Association” (German: Arbeiter Samariter Bund), ASB, was founded.

The organization quickly expanded to other cities in Germany and is currently present in 16 countries within the European community.
